At age fifteen, Casey Agasi broke away from bedroom dancing and snuck out to his first rave in one of Seattle's industrial neighborhoods. All perceptions he had of being a dancer were turned on their heads and he became the fly on the dance floor, soaking in the motions of every club kid. Agasi collected every ass wiggle and arm pop he saw, tweaking them and adding new dimensions of intricacy. Time passed and his dancing had become this bizarre entity that he could not seem to categorize or refine. Somebody who saw him dancing at a club suggested that he rent "Paris is Burning". Agasi rented the film and was completely blown away. He was Voguing. A dance style that evolved clear across the country in a different time period found him in a vacuum. He declared kismet.

What is Voguing? A section of the wikipedia page on Voguing states:

"...Vogue is a form of modern dance characterized by photo model like poses taken from Vogue (magazine) integrated with angular, linear and rigid arm, leg and body movements..."

Typically Vogue scenes are comprised of multiple houses, collectives of dancers that compete against one another in the scene. Where is mention of Seattle in that last paragraph? Enter the House of Charlatan. What is a Charlatan? It's an impostor, a fake, a fraud. Voguers of opposing houses are notorious for cutting each other down through dance, a practice called "throwing shade". Being the last of the major U.S. cities to create a Voguing scene, Agasi anticipated much shade being called on HOC's originality. What power is shade if we've already called it? House of Charlatan was born. They turned heads during their debut appearance at the New Years edition of COMEBACK!

Please, Please, Please leave your poi at home for the night and put trash in a garbage bins. As long as we respect the venue, we get to keep having this amazing event every year.

The Space Virgin Arts Collective started as a Seattle-based Burning Man theme camp in 1994, but we have since grown to include off-playa art projects and events. In keeping with the Burning Man philosophy "no observers, only participants", our art is often interactive and experiential, plunging participants into theatrical-style sets and engendering joyful, transformative experiences. We are an eclectic group with diverse talents, and we believe that artists and their friends develop strong, supportive relationships by working together on large scale projects, educating each other with their unique skills, and sharing resources. Our art projects, events and other endeavors are run entirely by our volunteer members and friends. http://www.spacevirgin.org
